Thank you, John.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of his life and work,\u00a0 we asked Tom Breidenbach to dedicate a poem to his memory.<\/p>\n<p>___________________________<\/p>\n<p>Lea Lay<\/p>\n<p>\u2014for John, in memorium<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are amazing\u2026\u201d \u2014John Ashbery, from \u201cSome Trees\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their sundry heights, the crowns<br \/>\non some apportioned geometrically<br \/>\nabout a slant echo of their stem,<br \/>\nthe spindly chute the seed<br \/>\nattaches to in rows like fraying<br \/>\nfeathers in a faerie arrow\u2019s tail\u2026<br \/>\nTheir wispy lusters roam<br \/>\nfrom blonde to green slats<br \/>\nand dribbles interspersed<br \/>\nwith ruddy motes\u2014the browns<br \/>\nof flower husks whose prickly<br \/>\nnubs exclaim regalia\u2019s symbols\u2014<br \/>\nand on to woven sprays of umber<br \/>\nor a bristly and recessive blaze<br \/>\nwhose ochre taunt evanesces<br \/>\nfrom sienna\u2019s paler intonations<br \/>\nintermeshed in chiefly static<br \/>\npoise among the dun and lumpish<br \/>\nauburn tangles knotting<br \/>\nthis fleece of sward winds burnish<br \/>\nat it brazes in the summer sun.<br \/>\nWith tips like listing quills<br \/>\nscribbling a score of constant song<br \/>\nand a winsome spate of narrow<br \/>\nleaves that tend to curl<br \/>\ntheir pointed tips groundward<br \/>\nthe tallest bob and bow<br \/>\nas though observing, or lean<br \/>\nin meekly fractured unison as<br \/>\nif repeating gestures of oblation<br \/>\nresembling the ardent arc<br \/>\na just sovereign\u2019s scepter traces<br \/>\nin conferral of forgiveness<br \/>\nor a duty.
